It was at the beginning of the last century that the Counts
of degli Azzoni Avogadro left the Veneto region of Italy
and moved south. Drawn by the countryside and landscape of Tuscany,
they stopped at La Rotta, a small village on
the banks of the Arno River, halfway between Florence and Pisa.
Since then, the fertile soil of the plains has been cultivated
for crops while the sun-drenched hillsides have lent themselves
particularly well to vine growing.
Count Aldobrandino, grandfather of the current
owner, ran the farm with the help of several share-croppers up
until the Second World War. His son, Count Roberto,
then began to gradually transform the business. Adding to the
range of traditional crops, he introduced poplar trees and set
up a game reserve and pheasant breeding program.
Count Aldobrando maintains the tradition today,
introducing vegetable and aromatic crops such
as parsley, spinach, marrows, beans, etc. Wine growing
and making is undoubtedly the central activity of the
business and given the recent investments, it is sure to take
on an even more important role in the near future. Soon, work
to restore two ex-grain stores will be finished, creating a reception
area with a golf driving range and a wine tasting room.
